Convective drying:
It is the type of drying in which hot air is circulated around the components causing the moisture to evaporate. The hotter the air, the faster is the drying. This is the conventional method of component drying.
Vacuum drying:
It is a drying process done in an air-tight vessel. Using vacuum pumps, the humidity and the pressure in the chamber are lowered. Since the atmospheric pressure is reduced, the components dry more quickly.
Advantages of vacuum drying over Convective drying:
Convective drying is a simpler process compared to vacuum drying, but it has it’s downsides. Extensively hot air cannot be used as that would degrade the component quality. Also, for some plastic components, hot air above 50deg cannot be used and such low temperatures will result in inefficient component drying. Thus, vacuum drying is an excellent drying process for heat sensitive components.
